Key to the kinship between painting and poetry is the interest in metaphors to convey abstract ideas and emotions—things that ordinary language cannot fully express. Marvelous Metaphors: Art as Visual Poetry is inspired by this figural instrument as it plays on words and images, while still allowing room for interpretation. No two people encountering the same poem or artwork will come away with the same reading. The 6 artists selected for this exhibition are very diverse: Trinh Mai, Christine Nguyen, Tammy Nguyen, Trinh Ponce, Dao Strom, and Van Tran. However, they all share in common works that lend themselves well for multiple interpretations and for explorations into the many layers of meanings embedded within. This exhibition was curated by Thuy N. D. Tran, Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests include politics of identity and representation in contemporary visual culture. She received her Masters degree in Art History from Arizona State University and her Bachelors from the University of California, Los Angeles with a major in Art History and dual minors in Cultural Anthropology and Museum Studies.
